Overview

Even if you are heading to a Western destination its essential you find out all the necessary health requirements and be prepared.

In this guide we outline some basic gear and precautions you should take and give advice on where to look for help.

Medical Insurance

As part of planning your trip you should take out appropriate medical insurance which is usually part of your travel insurance. Make sure this covers you in all the countries you will be visiting. Always make the insurance company aware of any pre-existing illnesses you may have as othwerise they may not pay out on your claims.

First Aid Kit

Always take some basic first aid materials with you. This should include plasters, antiseptic wipes/cream, bandages, sterile pads and surgical tape. Depending on your destination you should also take more specific kit such as a sterile needle kit, emergency dental kit, water treatment tablets and possible emergency antibiotics. Before leaving arrange an appointment with your local GP to discuss possible health risks in your destinations.

Safe Sex

Whilst travelling and meeting so many new people its especially important that you practice safe sex. One night could spoil your whole trip. Visit your family planning clinic before you go and get supplies.

Vaccinations

For many developing countries you will need to get additional vaccinations for diseases such as Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Hep A & B. You may also need to take anti malarial drugs. To check your destinations and requirements visit http://www.who.int/ith/countries/en/index.html or http://www.thehtd.org/travel/default.asp. Also arrange a visit with your doctor for the most up to date information.
