.: WHERE TO BUY
.: INTERNET
.: TRAVEL AGENT
.: TYPES OF FLIGHT

Overview

Unless you're off to Europe or Ireland its likely you'll be getting a flight to your destination. We give you tips and advice on getting a good deal

Where to buy?

Five years ago your only option was to go into a travel agent and book a flight or you could sit for hours in front of teletext! Now internet agents are everywhere you means you can get some great deals without leaving the house

In general the internet can be the cheapest place to buy flights but this is not always the best option. The advice and guidance given by staff can be invaluable to helping your trip and make you choose a better option.

Buying on the Internet

If you are planning a basic A to B flight then get on the internet and find a good deal. Find a site that uses a live system that actually checks for seat availability (try www.airline-network.co.uk) . Some have great prices plastered everywhere but then there are no seats on these planes. Always check for dates a week either of the side you want to leave as the prices can vary a lot. Specials are usually monthly with airlines so check the next month as well if you can be flexible. Christmas is an expensive time to fly so go in the Autumn or Spring if possible. Booking as early as possible is not always the cheapest as flights are not designated that early and specials can be introduced a couple of months before - saying that don't leave it too late!! Check if tickets are electronic or printed and see when they will be sent out.

Buying at a Travel Agent

Travel agents prices are usually £10-50 more expensive than booking on the internet but for their advice it can be worth it. Go to an agents that understand the trip you want and don't feel like you have to buy on the spot. Most agents will quote you or allow you to put down a deposit.

We would especially recommend a travel agent if you are planning a complicated trip with numerous flights. These can be hard to book on the internet and its better to let the risk lie with the agent rather than you!

You would be surprised on how little commission agents get paid on flights these days so you'll find some will try and sell you a whole holiday. Don't be pressured into this.

At an agents the best deal is only as good as how bothered the agent is at looking for it. If you feel they aren't really trying try a different branch or go back another day - make them work for their money!!

Types of Flights: Direct, Stopover or Round the World?

There are three main types of flights available for you to purchase.

Direct flights will fly you from A to B without any stops (unless you are heading off to the other side of the world then they need to refuel!) They are usually the cheapest to buy and easiest to find. If you have one main destination to head to then this is your best option.

Stopover flights are similar to direct flights but allow you to get off along the way and spend some time visiting another country. They are a good cheap way of getting another bit of travelling in and seeing a country you otherwise may not. However on the flip side it can cost you a lot of money to commute from the airport and send you jet lag crazy! Ask about possible stopovers when you buy your flight.

Round the World Flights are a great option if you don't really have any plans. Offered by the main airline groups such as Star Alliance and One World, they allow you to fly wherver usually limited by mileage or destinations. Over buying flights separately they can save you a hell of a lot of money. They usually allow you to change your flights and times whilst travelling and allow you to make new plans as you go. Have a look at www.thegreatescapade.com for an example. Prices start at around £800.
